Things had been awkward between him and Lois since Sunday night, no doubt, but she was more open to having conversations with him as long as they didn’t talk about what had happened back in college.

He contemplated calling her brother for like half a second, then thought better. He didn’t need Lance’s blessing to date Lois. The connection he felt with her now was even stronger than the ever-present hormones whenever she was around back in his early twenties. Even if things had started off on a thorny start between them, tonight he was going to be on his best behavior if it killed him.

They’d agreed to meet at the event instead of driving together, so he made sure he was early. The table they were assigned to already had two couples seated and, if coincidences were like lucky pennies, well, he’d have two pennies. Because it was that much of a stretch to figure out he’d been set up as he greeted TS and Noel and Kade and Patrice.

“Fancying seeing you all here. It’s been what, four hours since I saw TS at work and a day since Kade and I played pickle ball?”

“That’s what I like about you, Doc. You’re handsome and funny.” Noel pointed behind him. “And you have great taste in women. Looks like your date is here.”

Adam spun around and took in the sight of Lois walking toward him. The first thing he noticed was how her eyes locked onto him, as if he were the only other person in the room.

She wore a dark blue, form fitting dress that flared slightly around her ankles. She wore her hair pulled up with a few tendrils left down, framing her beautiful face. His fingers itched to pull down the intricate style, but he’d save that for later—when they were alone and if he was lucky enough that she wanted him just as much. He felt confident that now he knew the reason she’d been standoffish in the beginning that they could have a fresh start.

Adam couldn’t take his off her as she stopped by an empty chair, then looked around the table at their chaperones. “What do we have here? Afraid Adam and I won’t play nice tonight?”

TS spoke first. “Actually, we wanted a front-row seat. Hey, ow.” He rubbed his shoulder where his wife pinched him.

“We thought it would be fun if all of us hung out now that you two aren’t…well, you know.” Kade turned to Patrice, a pleading look on his face.

“Oh, no, you managed to do work yourself into a corner all by yourself. Go on, tell them what you meant, honey.”

Everyone laughed and any remaining uncertainty or worry about how the evening would play out was quickly replaced with the anticipation of good friends sharing a fun evening.

The announcement for dinner came over the p.a. system and Adam pulled out Lois’s chair for her. After she was settled, he took his own seat and when he looked over at her; they shared a smile.
